Benin Prison Trains 122 Inmates, Panel Frees 15 Others in Imo

Benin Prison Trains 122 Inmates, Panel Frees 15 Others in Imo
Oko Prison Benin City in partnership with Christ Embassy’s Benin Zone 1 Foundation School Programme and an entertainment outfit, Laughter International concluded training for 122 prison inmates comprising of 19 females and 103 males.

The training which was intensive covered:
general principles of agriculture,
1.Benefits of farming,
2.Specialisation in fish farming,
3. Crops handling, and
4. Marketing of products of such agricultural activities.

The high point of the graduation ceremony which was held after practical and written examinations was the cutting of the graduation cake and distribution of Certificates of attendance to the 122 participating inmates amid cheers and appreciation. Drama sketch, music, jokes and dance were also featured as anchored by Pastor Chikason of Laughter International.

Awards were presented to the Officer Incharge of Oko Prison Deputy Controller of Prison, Evboruan Godwin and the Assistant Controller of Prison InCharge Welfare Unit, ACP Julius Osemwingie by the Foundation School for their immense efforts, support and contributions to the successes of several trainings held for the inmates.

DCP Godwin who also represented the Controller of Prisons CP Osayande O Amadin thanked both organisations for their commitments in supporting the efforts of the Nigerian Prisons Service in bettering the lives of the prison inmates and by extension, the society. He assured them of the firm resolve of the Prisons Service as exemplified by the CG of Prisons Ja’afaru Ahmed to improve the service delivery and lives of all prison inmates.

In another development, Chairman, Presidential Committee on Prison Decongestion, Justice U I Bello SAN of the FCT High Court has announced the release of 15 inmates from Owerri and Okigwe Prisons in Imo State Command.

Fines were paid on behalf of some of the freed inmates while other were pardoned for spending over 10 years on awaiting trial.

The team which included the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami and ACG Operation amongst others earlier received at Imo/Rivers boundary,was led on a courtesy visit to Governor Rocha’s Okorocha of Imo State by Controler of Prisons,Imo Command CP Chris Okoye.

Addressing stakeholders at the Govt House,the Chairman of the Committee Justice Bello and Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State commended the President Buhari for taking this bold step towards decongesting the Prisons.
