Trust, Governance to Dominate Discussions at NIPR 2018 Abuja Conference

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) FCT Chapter is set to organize her 2018 annual conference and AGM in Abuja with the theme, “Bridging the Trust Gap in Governance: Implications for Emerging Democracies”.

According to the Chairman of the AGM/Conference Planning Committee, “we consider this year’s theme very germane to the growth and sustainability of our nascent democracy and governance imperatives. A recent survey by Edelman Trust Barometer shows that more than half of the global population expressed distrust in government institutions.

In Nigeria, the last two decades has witnessed abuse of power and the plunder of our national resources, which has plunged the country into the political and economic mess that it is today. The apparent disconnect between the government and Nigerian citizens arises from the lack of trust and faith in the political and governance systems. In a nutshell, trust in governance in Nigeria is at an all-time low and portends grave danger for our democratic society ahead of the 2019 general elections”.

In recent years, the annual conference of the Chapter have become reputed for attracting cerebral and celebrated national leaders of diverse backgrounds to as special keynote speakers. This year’s conference, which will be held at Transcorp Hilton Hotel Abuja will feature two highly respected and cerebral first class traditional rulers as headline speakers, while the panelists are distinguished professionals who also operate on the global stage.

The activities lined up for the annual general meeting spread over three days include; a Digital Training workshop for undergraduates of Communication Arts in Nigerian Universities (public and private) within Abuja and its environs – the workshop serves as an introduction to a range of tools that can help undergraduates of Communication Courses work more effectively in the digital environment. Even if they are confident with their ICT abilities, it is very easy to miss really useful apps and online tools that can transform the way they study and work. The training will certainly make them more effective and efficient students. This is scheduled for Wednesday 13th November, 2018.

The second activity is the Professional Training Workshop for PR / Communication executives – geared towards enhancing the capacity of PR/Communication practitioners for optimal performance at their various organizations and scheduled for Wednesday 14th November, 2017 at Sheraton Hotels and Towers, Abuja by 9am.

The third is the Annual Conference – designed to add value to our democratic and governance experience through quality presentations and discourse by Guest Speakers and other participants. Then there will be the Annual General Meeting where members of the noble Institute shall brainstorm on topical issues affecting the Public Relations Profession. Finally, the three days event will end with Dinner/Awards where few Nigerians who have distinguished themselves shall be honoured. The venue is Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Abuja.

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) is the umbrella body of professional Public Relations practitioners chartered to regulate as well as direct its development and the practice. The Institute is focused on improving practitioners’ skill sets in the area of Strategic communication, Brand PR, Social Media, Crisis Management, Digital PR, Employee Relations, CSR, Public Affairs, Government Relations, Political Communication and Media training through conferences, awards, programmes and workshops.
