Ghana’s IPR withdraws from hosting APRA 2020 Conference

The Institute of Public Relations (IPR) Ghana will no longer host the 2020 edition of the African Public Relations Association (APRA) Conference, as a result of some notable events that will take place in the West African nation next year.

This was made known in a press release signed by APRA’s Secretary General Jane Gitau, who said the decision was taken by IPR owing to the grounds that 2020 is an election year in Ghana.

According to IPR Ghana, hosting APRA conference may not command the necessary attention it deserves especially from office holders in government, saying: “In addition, IPR will be welcoming news executives which was considered expedient to give them more time to settle in before hosting a conference of such magnitude.”

The President of IPR, Elaine Sam, however re-affirmed the Institute’s commitment to the ideals of APRA and promised to continue playing a significant role in its evolution and development.

She further said hosting APRA 2021 conference may be considered by IPR Ghana, while APRA scout for a new host for its 2020 conference.

But, APRA’s President, Mr. Yomi Badejo-Okusanya, in his response, acknowledged the Institute’s decision, while recognizing IPR’s role in APRA resuscitation in the late 90s and early 2000.

“Both APRA and IPR Ghana have agreed to issue a joint communique, while planning for next year’s APRA conference continues. The conference dates – May 11-15, 2020, still holds, but a new host country and association will be announced in soonest.

“APRA and IPR, equally wish to apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause to participants. However, we are working hard to ensure that APRA 2020 conference does not fall short of the global standard expected of such a mega event,” he said.
