COVID -19 : Inmates Sensitized on Coronavirus Epidemic

In a bid to prevent the spread of corona virus and safe-guard the health and hygienic status of boys in-care. Borstal institution – a centre for training and correction of young erring offenders; which is a juvenile arm of Nigerian Correctional Service partners with Habiba Charity Foundation- a non-governmental organization to sensitize staff and students on COVID-19.

This is in line with the leadership vision and dictates of Controller –General of Correctional Service, Ja’afaru Ahmed to keep staff and those in custody safe from deadly disease- COVID-19.

The foundation through its founder Engr. Rasheed Sumonu organize a group of certified medical and health practitioners led by Dr. Olukoya to sensitize, educate and inform staff and students on how to be free from the deadly virus.

The team in an attempt to break the chain of the virus spread, creates awareness on safety and health measures, how to maintain hygienic status, hand washing techniques, how to prevent contacting the virus, signs and symptoms and other important information to keep staff and student safe from contacting the virus.

Also, as an effective means to control and prevent the spread of virus to custodial centre, the foundation donates protective items like the CEM- non contact forehead infrared thermometer for testing, hand sanitizers, nose-mask and other hygienic kits.

After the sensitization program, staff appreciates their thoughtfulness and timely support, though there was hand wash section before any staff gain access to the yard, some staff says that they are better equipped to exercise preventive measures.

The sensitization program was held within the institution premise.

Earlier in the month, the institution record success as seventeen (17) of the nineteen (19) students that registered and sat for JAMB on Saturday March 14th, 2020 scored above the 180mark set as cut-off by JAMB, while twelve (12) students score above 200mark. The highest scoring student had 254marks while the least scored 172marks.

In appreciation of the foundation, the Controller of Corrections CCS V M Fatodu appreciates their thoughtfulness, timely intervention and the ability to come to the institution’s aid whenever they are called upon for support and assistance, she holds that the foundation runs an inclusive programs as it focus on the welfare of those in custody. She believes that today sensitization program will douse tension and address the skeptic minds of parents, relatives and members of the public that doubt the ability of the Nigerian Correctional Service to prevent the spread of virus into custodial centers.
