COVID-19: Finally, NEMA Activates National Disaster Response Plan for Mass Care

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has commenced the implementation of strategies to provide leadership in Security, Logistics Mass Care (one of the Functional areas of the Presidential Task Force) response to Coronavirus 19 (COVID-19) pandemic in Nigeria.

In this regard, all structures as provided by the National Disaster Response Plan have been activated. Consequently, the Agency held a meeting with the relevant stakeholders to discuss about implementation of the strategies, especially regarding to essential needs and modalities for conveying the supports to the people.

Director General of NEMA Engr Mustapha Maihaja said all NEMA offices nationwide have already been directed to also liaise with the State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) and other relevant stakeholders in their respective areas to, on the established strategy, under assign responsibilities and roles, to ensure effective response to COVID-19.

The DG who was represented by the Director of Planning Research and Forecasting Mr Kayode Fagbemi said the Agency was aware of the consequential impacts of the pandemic, therefore is coordinating other responders for security, logistics and mass care in support of the response to the COVID-19 .

Already all staff have been put on alert as part of the essential services during the critical period of the pandemic.

Present at the meeting were representatives of the relevant stakeholders that include Office of the National Security Adviser, Defense Headquarters, Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense corps, Nigerian Red Cross Society and Federal Road Safety Corps, Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Federal Fire Service, Federal ministry of Interior, International Committee for Red Cross and NEMA.
