COVID-19: Anambra Govt Grants Amnesty to 156 Prison Inmates
Further to the 54 inmates earlier released by grant of Amnesty by the Executive Governor of Anambra State Chief Willie Obiano as earlier reported, another set of *101* awaiting trial inmates have regained their freedom. This now made it 156 Inmates that have been freed.
The Honourable, the Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice OM Anyachebelu in conjunction with his brother Judges and Magistrates are reviewing the cases of awaiting trial inmates in custody and have released 101 of them across the four Custodial centres, as a way of reducing congestion.
The inmates released include * *53 from Onitsha Custodial Centre, 22 from Awka Custodial Centre ,24 from Nnewi Custodial Centre and 2 from Aguata Custodial Centre,.*
This is in furtherance to the efforts towards the decongestion of the Custodial Centres, to prevent the spread of Covid-19 due to their vulnerability.
The Judiciary has promised to continually partner with the Nigerian Correctional Service Anambra State Command in decongesting the Custodial Centres during this pandemic.

The Governor of Anambra State Chief Dr. Willie OBIANO in exercise of the powers conferred on him by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has granted amnesty to 54 deserving inmates convicted of minor offences in the four custodial centres of the Nigerian Correctional Service Anambra State Command.
The Controller of Corrections in the State Barr. Nwakeze Emmanuel received the document of release today 20th April 2020 in his office in Awka.
Addressing the freed inmates in Awka Custodial Centre shortly after announcing the prerogative of mercy list, the Controller admonished them to be of good behaviour and to reciprocate this gesture by shunning all acts and occasions that may lead them to committing offences liable to bringing back to custody.
The Controller of Corrections appreciated His Excellency on behalf of the Controller General of Corrections Ja’afaru Ahmed, for his timely intervention to avoid the spread of Covid-19.
21 inmates were released from Onitsha Custodial Centre while Awka, Aguata and Nnewi had 18,9 and 6 inmates released respectively.
