Kano Govt Tackles Erosion after Media Report

After a report by Arewa Agenda about communities affected by devastating flooding in Kano, the State Government has vowed to take necessary actions in tackling the menace.

The Kano State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Ibrahim Kabiru Getso, who made the commitment during an interaction with Arewa Agenda editorial team crew, said he was disturbed with the loss of lives and property due to the incidence.

According to the Commissioner, the ministry under him is putting adequate proactive and preventive measures in place to tackle issues of environmental degradations as it affects the people.

“I can assure you that when we receive complains, we take immediate actions. We have sorted a lot of similar cases recently. That is why we enjoy people to always report any concern, we also encourage our staff who come across any environmental issue to quickly draw our attention, even you reporters, when you air or publish some of your reports, we take proactive action to bring an end to it. Apart from that we are also doing some civil works in prone areas. So we are really untop of issues.

“We are witnessing a lot of flooding episodes in some communities and this is not unexpected because the report from the hydrological survey that have been conducted in the country has shown that Kano and many states will witness unprecedented flooding this year.

While decrying the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the State, the Commissioner said that the government has employed sanitation vanguards who will be deployed to various communities to enlighten members of households to be conducting sanitation exercise, educate them on the importance of sanitation and also to monitor and supervise whether or not people are conducting sanitation in their domiciles.

While appreciating the Arewa Agenda for its investigative reports towards a better society, the Commissioner assured them of his support and cooperation in their journalistic endeavours.

Recall that Arewa Agenda had reported that for about seven years, the people of Gaida, Unguwan Kwari and Gida Dubu, communities of Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State have been suffering countless loss of lives and properties after heavy downpours every rainy season.

The communities host waterways that takes in large volumes of flood from the Sabon Titi (Madobi) underpass, Ja’in, Dorayi and Sharada Industrial areas, but lacks a concrete drainage system that will properly manage an over flooding of the banks, thereby causing recurring destruction for local residents.
