YOSEMA Wins Best Emergency Management Agency at SAEMA 2020

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA) has bagged the best agency in Emergency Management at the annual Security and Emergency Management Awards (SAEMA) 2020.

YOSEMA was established by a Law of Yobe State Emergency Management Agency and Other Matters Related Thereto of October 2010 to implement the State Humanitarian, Disaster and Emergency Related Activities in a coordinated and principled response to emergencies in Yobe State.

The construction and inauguration of houses for internally displaced persons in the state despite all odds was what earned YOSEMA the Emergency management category of SAEMA 2020.

Under the able superintendence of Dr Mohammed Goje as its Director General, Yobe State Emergency Management Agency has been in the spotlight for its effectiveness in carrying out its well defined functions which include, institutional collaborations and coordination, disaster risk assessment, disaster risk reduction, disaster preparedness, prevention and mitigation, disaster response and disaster recovery.

An Epidemiologist and Humanitarian analyst, Dr Goje has Master’s degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Prior to his coming to YOSEMA in 2019, he had acquired experiences in various areas of work which include program planning and coordination, proposal and work plan development, advocacy, vaccines and Immunization, capacity building, project coordination, supervision, data collection and analysis (both qualitative and quantitative). He is also grounded in epidemiological activities, Non-communicable disease research, technical support to malaria projects, reproductive health, psycho-social Support and Gender Base Violence interventions in emergencies.

Dr Mohammed Goje worked previously as program consultant with ActionAid Nigeria supporting RH project in Yobe state; he also worked State Analyst-Vaccines supporting Yobe State Primary Health care on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF)/ Dangote Routine Immunization Project in Yobe State.

He had equally worked as Program Coordinator (BORNO) of UNFPA Funded project, Strengthening Sexual and Reproductive Health service provision in conflict-affected communities in North-Eastern Nigeria (STRESPCIN) implemented by Actionaid Nigeria.

Dr Goje was also Epidemiological Activities Manager with Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF-OCA) with the main responsibility of outbreak investigation as well epidemiological functions of the four MSF-OCA projects in Nigeria in addition with the responsibility of ensuring that the data generated from projects are valid and of good quality.

His international experience includes working as Data Analyst Consultant (Evaluation and Analysis of Malaysia Community Health Society Project, Impact of smoke-free homes: Strategy toward Anti-Smoking among Households in Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA) Scheme).

Dr Mohammed Goje qualified as Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Maiduguri and has a Master of Science (Msc) in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of Putra, Malaysia, among other academic and professional certifications. Among the professional bodes belongs are the International Epidemiological Association (IEA), Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) and Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA).
