Gulak: Igbo Groups React to Assassination, Threat of Northern Youths

Igbo think tank Nzuko Umunna commiserates with Ahmed Gulak’s family, sues for civic engagement in South East

Igbo think-tank Nzuko Umunna expresses its deep shock and sadness at the news of the murder of notable politician Ahmed Gulak on his way to Sam Mbakwe Airport, Owerri by persons described as bandits by the Nigerian Police.

We commiserate with the family of Dr. Gulak and his political associates in both the APC and the PDP. The memories of his outstanding contributions in both the Nigerian political and legislative spheres will be fondly remembered for a long time. May his soul rest in peace.

Nzuko Umunna condemns this act of violence as totally reprehensible and yet another extension of the uncontrolled bloodletting in the country. Such violent acts are not in the character of Imo people and go totally against the grain of the culture and way of life of the people of the region.

We strongly condemn this latest bloodletting which again signposts the unacceptable level of insecurity being experienced across various States and regions of the country.

In particular, Nzuko Umunna decries the growing violence heightened by the region’s militarization and urge the Federal Government to remove the chokehold on the region. Instead, the government should ensure a return to civic engagement rather than the settlement of disputes through the barrel of the gun.

Gulak Assassination: Igbo Group Reacts to Threat of Northern Youths on Gov Uzodinma

Igbo Peace Ambassadors (IPA), the apex conflict resolution group for the South-East geopolitical zone has taken Northern Youths to the cleaners over their mischievous threat to revenge the unwarranted killing of Alhaji Ahmed Gulak by unidentified gunmen in Owerri, if his assailants were not fished out and brought to book within two weeks.

The group also directed the Northern elements to join in the fight against banditry ravaging their zone, instead of creating ethic crisis with their threat.

National President of the group, Engr Uju Okoro, while reacting to the threat, expressed annoyance that while the state government led by Governor Hope Uzodinma in discreet collaboration with security agents were working assiduously to uncover and apprehend those behind the dastardly act since the news of the killing broke out, some Northern fanatics who suppose to applaud the efforts were busy fanning the ember of discord.

According to Engr Okoro, the gruesome murder of the former Presidential Aide, Alhaji Gulak was not only regrettable and uncalled for, but an indication that the security architecture of the country is becoming porous.

He cautioned those Northern Youths who joined in the threat to instead look for a better way to sustain the unity of the country, rather than threatening an Igbo Governor who is leaving no stone unturned in uniting every tribe in Imo State..

The national President of the group therefore maintained that the mischievous threat by the Northerners was capable of sparking off ethnic crisis that can disintegrate Nigeria, urging them to join hands with all relevant authorities to bring those behind the killing to book.

Engr Okoro further called on security agencies to arrest those involved in the threat to serve as deterrent to others planing to tour the same line of action in future, while warning anyone instigating tribal war to desist, as no person has monopoly of crisis.

While describing Igbos as accommodating and peace loving people, also regretted the security challenges in the country which he said requires decisive measure to tackle before it degenerates to break down of law and order.
