Lack of Ethical Values in Public Officers ‘Killing’ Reforms–BPSR DG

The Director General, Bureau of Public Service Reforms, BPSR, Mr. Dasuki Ibrahim Arabi, has offered an explanation as to why reform agenda and policies initiated for the growth of the public service often fail to achieve any tangible result.

According to him, reforms cannot strive if public officers lack a set of ethical values.

Arabi, disclosed this in his goodwill message at the ‘5th Annual Integrity Icon Summit and Award Ceremony’.

The event was organized by Accountability Lab Nigeria.

The BPSR Director General, who was represented by Mr. Egbe Ekpe, Head of Special Duties and Project at the Bureau, stressed that the quest for a better Nigeria has to be collective.

He said all hands must be on deck to ensure that the country is transformed to the best standard attainable amongst the developed nations.

“Reforms cannot strive without a set of ethical values by Public Officers, and it is obvious that where these set of values are lacking or absent, then issues of credibility and integrity suffices,” he added.

Arabi, further noted that issues around ethics in the Public Service are taken very seriously, as it reinforces a set of expectations required from officers, and as well prescribes the rules that regulates the moral conduct of officers while in Service.

He said: “The theme for the Summit, which is: “The role of people of integrity in enhancing good governance in Nigeria – Challenges and Opportunities,‘’ is apt, and core to the implementation of reforms in the Public Service, as it seeks to support the development of a culture of integrity within government and facilitates lessons sharing approaches for value shifts from individual integrity to broader institutional integrity”.
