Ukrainian Refugee Crisis Hits 3.7million as Zelenskyy Cries for Military Assistance

Barely a month after Russian invasion, the Ukrainian refugee crisis has been judged as one of the worst in recent history, a report by United Nation High Commissioner for Refugee, UNHCR, says.

According to United Nations, about 3.7millions Ukrainian refugees are scattered across the neighboring countries as a result of ongoing war with Russia.

In the same vein, data from Pew Research Center analysis of United Nations also classified Ukrainian refugee outflow as the sixth-largest over the past 60-plus years.

There are now almost as many Ukrainian refugees as there were Afghan refugees fleeing the (first) Taliban regime in 2001, according to figures compiled by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

“They represent about 9.1% of Ukraine’s pre-invasion population of about 41.1 million – ranking the current crisis 16th among 28 major refugee crises by share of population.”

While Russia has been pushing hard with its invasion, the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has continued with his appeal to the European communities and NATO for military assistance so as to resist the Russian aggression.

Zelenskyy, in his speech after a talk about supplying weapons to Ukraine, he specifically questioned Western nations lackadaisical approach as to whether they are scared of the nuclear armed Russia.

“So who runs the Euro-Atlantic community? Is it still Moscow because of intimidation?” Zelenskyy said.

He noted that, Ukraine do not have sophisticated weapons capable of shooting down Russian fighter jets or missiles as at present.

“Ukraine cannot shoot down Russian missiles using shotguns, machine guns,” Zelenskyy said, adding that the country has plentiful supplies.

His speech came after several rockets hit the western Ukrainian city of Lviv just 45 miles away from Poland during Biden’s visit in Warsaw.

“For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power,” Biden said of Putin at the end of his speech from the Royal Castle in Warsaw.
