Stranded Nigerian Medical Student in Russia Gets Ex-Sokoto Governor, Sen. Wamakko’s N2m Donation

The immediate-past Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko has offered a cash donation to Usman Yahaya, a Nigerian medical student, presently at the ‘mercy’ of Russian Immigration authorities.

PRNigeria, last month, first reported that Yahaya was first suspended by Irkutsk State Medical University (ISMU) and evicted from the campus hostel when the Sokoto government could not pay his overdue scholarship.

After his ejection from the campus, the Sokoto State-born medical student was allegedly detained at a Russian immigration camp at Angarsk Irkutsk, by authorities of the European nation’s Immigration due to corrupt practices at Sokoto Scholarship Board.

The student has appeared twice at a Russian State court and if eventually convicted, Yahaya may be expelled from ISMU, detained or even banned from entering Russia, in the nearest future.

Wamakko, a serving Senator in the National Assembly, NASS, is the second high-profile Nigerian elite to support a crowdfunding initiative launched by the Association of Nigerian Students in Europe, ANSE, for Yahaya.

The Founder of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria, MAAUN, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, had donated the sum of N1 million to help tackle Yahaya’s ordeal in Russia.

The cash donation by Prof. Gwarzo, which was done through ANSE, was received by the Manager of PRNigeria Centre in Kano, Adnan Mukhtar.

Sen. Wamakko’s N2 million donation was confirmed by ANSE President, Bashiru Muhammad, who expressed deep gratitude to the former Sokoto State Governor.

Muhammad, while calling on philanthropic Nigerians to financially support their crowdfunding initiative launched for Yahaya, said Sen. Wamakko’s donation will go a long to help offset part of their colleague’s accommodation and other required fees.
