Citizens Acquiring Arms for Self-Defense, Recipe for Anarchy, CISLAC Says

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, CISLAC, has said that citizens procuring ammunition for self-protection will not curb insecurity, but rather aggravate it.

Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, revealed CISLAC’s position in Lagos, on Tuesday.

He was speaking at a ‘One-Day Media Workshop on Defence Anti-Corruption Reportage, Civic Space and Oversight”, organized by CISLAC, in collaboration with Transparency International – Defence and Security Program, and supported by the Netherlands’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The event was aimed at sensitizing journalists on defense and security budgets, in order to identify corruption risks and possible areas of investigative journalism.

Rafsanjani, who is the Executive Director of CISLAC, strongly condemned the action of some State Governors, asking their residents to arm themselves against constant attacks by terrorists, bandits and other violent groups.

He noted that allowing citizens to carry weapons will only contribute to the inflow of more arms into the hands of non-state actors, who will deploy them to orchestrate mayhem against the Nigerian state.

While commenting on the formation of local security outfits in some States, Rafsanjani, who is also the Chairman of Transition Monitoring Group (TMG), said that their CISLAC kicks against the proliferation of local security networks, established outside the legal framework of the Nigerian constitution.

According to him, the security networks lack the requisite skills and training to protect lives and human properties.

He said; “This move is another ploy to create a militia group by the Governors, who will end up participating in political thuggery during elections.”
