After concluding that Akwa Ibom State is a largely peaceful state with some pockets of security infractions, Commodore Olubode-Fazaz hinted that “we have collectively put in a lot of work to achieve a safe and peaceful state, we cannot allow miscreants to spoil our good works especially as we expect increased activities and movement from this festive season through to the general elections. It’s better to start working now, so that we can work less in the future”.
Another key resolution at the meeting was the imperative for collaboration, intelligence sharing and reducing tension amongst the services through relationship building. It was agreed that mutual respect should be maintained at all times, while efforts should be made to communicate with the right people in an organization. As such, phone numbers of officers with strategic responsibilities should be made available.
The following are other resolutions reached at the meeting:
1. Drug is the bane of almost all crimes. If drug abuse can be successfully eliminated, most crimes won’t even be committed in the first place.
2. Formations should share information on major crime/security challenge they are tackling so that others can be alert and be on the lookout or assist if possible.
3. Intelligence shared should be timely
4. Security agencies in the state are to carry out a well planned and coordinated SHOW OF FORCE exercise simultaneously in major towns in the state. The show of force must touch flash points in interior communities so that it hits the intended target with the intended message, and not a convoy-like driving on major roads. The exercise will be a continuous one.
5. There is the need to create an impression that a fight against one agency is a fight against all.
The representative of the DSS also shared intelligence on increased smuggling activities in litoral LGAs as well as plans to move weapons through litoral flanks between separatist groups in Nigeria and Cameroon.
The security parley was hosted by the Nigerian Navy and had the Nigeria Police, Immigration Service, NSCDC, Nigeria Corrections, DSS, NDLEA and the Nigeria Army in attendance.
