Arewa Economic Forum Advises Tinubu’s Incoming Administration on Reducing Governance Cost

The Secretary General of the Arewa Economic Renewal Forum, Mallam Muhammad Kudu Ibrahim, has decried the rising cost of governance in the country.

He, however, tasked the incoming administration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President-Elect, to assiduously work towards reducing Nigeria’s governance cost.

Kudu spoke during a TV Business Program on NTA, monitored by PRNigeria.

According to him, slashing down the cost of running the country should start from reforming the structural composition of the National Assembly.

“It shouldn’t just start reducing the number of government agencies, pruning it down and all that. It think the cost or savings can be made when we take a second look at our bicameral legislature.

“In 1979, when we adopted the presidential system of governance, naira was stable and superior to the American dollar. The economy could sustain the bicameral system of legislation, and I think the same can be done now.

“So you should start with the National Assembly, which in my view should even be made part-time to save cost because that is where the cost is.

“Let me tell you, at the National Assembly, with bicameral legislation with all the billions that goes into maintaining maybe less than 3,000 or 4,000 Nigerians just to keep them their, most of them end up not doing critical oversight function, we have had also reports of collusion between those that are supposed to be doing their oversight and the agencies involved.

“So, it is a double whammy, we are expecting so much money maintaining a bicameral legislature, and the critical oversight function doesn’t get done because of that collusion. So, what does that tell you?” he said.

Kudu who also President of Niger Value Resources Limited advocated for the empowerment of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, by the Tinubu incoming administration, to enable the federal government agency to educate Nigerians on how to inspire hope.
