NCoS, NOUN Strengthen Partnership for Inmates’ Academic Pursuits

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has introduced more flexible administrative procedures for accessing academic programmes in the university. The target is to expand services to more students and actualise the mantra of the university, which is ‘take quality education to the doorstep of every Nigerian to learn at his/her own pace and leave no one behind.’

The Director of the Correctional Service NOUN Special Study Centre, Francis Enobore disclosed this recently during an advocacy visit to the management of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Abuja. He noted that the new admission policy allows holders of National Diploma with Lower Credit to get direct entry admission into 200 level of relevant courses in the institution. In the same vein, holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) lower credit can get admission for direct entry into 300 level in relevant courses. Furthermore, holders of Secondary School certificates with a pass in mathematics before 2015, can be offered admission for religious studies while those with HND and have had 10 years working experience including a professional certificate and a postgraduate diploma can apply for master in business administration (MBA). Moreover, the management of the university has introduced a comprehensive monitoring template to ensure that students are attended to by their facilitators/supervisors as and when due thus, ensuring that they are able to finish course of study as scheduled.

Mr. Francis encouraged staff of the NCoS to leverage the window to upgrade themselves as well as enrol their dependants because the programme is flexible, cost effective and insulated from the undue delays usually suffered by public universities especially during industrial disputes.

He commended the inmates of the NCoS for distinguishing themselves always as some of them emerged among the best graduating students in the recent convocation of the University.

The National Coordinator, NOUN Special Study Centres, Mrs. Modupe Adesina expressed the readiness of NOUN to continue to partner the NCoS in providing quality education for all, including the inmates.

While welcoming the delegation, the Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, thanked the university authorities for the unrelenting commitment to supporting the reformation of offenders in custody especially the indigent inmates. Represented by the Deputy Controller General in the Directorate of Non-custodial Service, Ahmad Tukur, the CG reiterated the Service’s readiness to key into the reforms of the institution in line with its mandates to reform, rehabilitate and reintegrate offenders back to the society.
