Accompanied by the Chief Medical Director, Associate Professor, Raji Mahmud and the Hospital Public Relations Officer, Dr Tayo Haastrup and other members of the management team, the Honorable Minister stated that “prior to my appointment as Minister for Women Affairs, it had been a regular practice in the last 5 years to visit the National Hospital to identify with indigent Nigerians who cannot afford their hospital bills”. She added that part of her vision is to improve the wellbeing of Nigerian Women and Children through quality health care, skill acquisition programs and others in line with the policy focus of Mr. President on renewed hope for Nigerians.

During the visit, Barr Uju Ohanenye paid hospital bills for a victim of domestic gas cylinder explosion who was hospitalized since May this year, a 2 month old baby who underwent hernia surgery and other patients with various medical issues. She promised to use part of her first salary as a Minister to write off the bills of the gas explosion victim.

Responding, the Chief Medical Director, described her visit as unprecedented in the history of the National Hospital for a Minister for Women Affairs to come to the aid of indigent patients on the first day in office and thanked the Honorable Minister for remaining steadfast in helping the needy in the society.

Before leaving the hospital, the Honorable Minister pledged to make frequent visits to the National Hospital and other health institutions across the country as part of her plans to provide quality health care for Women and Children.
