Nigeria’s Brig. Gen. Grema Bags Guinea-Bissau National Award
Nigeria’s Brigadier General Al-hassan Muhammad Grema, the outgone Force Commander of the ECOWAS Stabilization Support Mission to the Republic of Guinea-Bissau (ECOMIB), on Thursday decorated with the National Order of Merit, Cooperation and Development Medal by President Úmaro Sissoco Embaló at the Presidential Palace in Bissau.
The award, PRNigeria gathered that was in recognition of Grema’s outstanding contributions to the success of the ECOMIB mission, which was deployed to Guinea-Bissau in 2020 to help stabilize the country following a series of political crises.
In a statement, the ECOWAS Commission praised Grema for his “diplomatic approach and interpersonal relationship with the mission stakeholders,” which it said had helped to earn ECOMIB a good reputation in the eyes of the Guinean people.

The Special Representative of the President of the ECOWAS Commission in Guinea-Bissau, Professor Hamidou Boly, lauded Grema for laying a “hallmark foundation” for the mission.
He said the successes recorded by ECOMIB were due in large part to Grema’s efforts to ensure the integration of the ECOWAS forces with the National Defence and Security Forces of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau.
Professor Boly expressed ECOWAS’ gratitude to the FC for his effort in ensuring integration of the ECOWAS forces with the National Defence and Security Forces of the Republic of Guinea Bissau within the short period of the mission’s deployment.
He however attributed the successes recorded by the mission to Gen Grema’s diplomatic approach and inter-personal relationship with the mission stakeholders.
He said the FC has earned a good reputation for the mission in the eyes of the Guinean people.
