Interior Ministry, BPSR Partner on Enhancing Border Security

Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has made known the commitment of the Government to partner with the Bureau of Public Service Reforms – BPSR in proffering solutions to the nation’s security challenges especially in securing the nation’s borders.

The Minister gave the pledge in Abuja while receiving officials of BPSR led by its Director General, Dasuki Ibrahim Arabi, who was in his office on a courtesy visit.

“I am ready to actively collaborate with the Bureau of Public Service Reforms to find solutions to our security challenges.”

He likewise encouraged other Ministries, Departments and Agencies to do the same as a matter of priority.

The Minister also talked about the need to accelerate reforms in key sectors of the economy and administration as this is the right thing to do if we are desirous of finding effective solutions to the pressing problems of our borders.

The Minister assured he is working seriously on efficient ways of securing Nigeria’s borders; saying a situation where illegal aliens easily find their way into the country often with fake travel documents has to be stopped.

In his view, Nigeria cannot be secured if its borders are not secured.

Earlier, the Director General -DG of the BPRS – Dasuki Ibrahim Arabi, explained that his Agency is mandated by law to initiate,  coordinate and ensure full implementation of Federal Government reform policies; saying the Bureau does this through partnership, cooperation, exchange of ideas and collaboration with MDAs for implementation and compliance of the reforms.

The BPRS DG explained that Nigeria’s Public Service Reforms are anchored on four pillars; the first of which is aimed at providing an enabling environment at both institutional and governmental levels in order to secure Nigeria.

According to him, the second pillar which is Socio-economic, sets targets to meet in the area of security.

The third pillar which is on Public Financial Management reforms relates to IPPIS, PMS, Single Account and other finance software that have been put in place to promote transparency in government. He also explained that the fourth Pillar relates to the reform of the Civil Service Administration itself; which involves training of security-related officers in Fire, Civil Defence,  Immigration  and Correctional Services. He also said such training also focuses on officers still in Service and those preparing to retire from service.
