How Artificial intelligence Streamlines Newsroom Activities, Journalists’ Work – Expert

A digital media expert, Dr. Isa Ali Musa, has urged journalists to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a means to boost their productivity and efficiency in news reportage.

He made the call during an end-of-year retreat/training organised for staff of Image Merchants Promotion (IMPR) Limited, at the PRNigeria Kano Centre, yesterday.

In a presentation titled, “Streamlining Newsroom Efficiency with Google Workspace,” Dr. Ali Musa emphasized that modern-day journalists need to be equipped with Information Technology Communication, ICT, skills that will make them adapt to their ever-evolving media landscape.

Musa, who also lectures at Bayero University, Kano (BUK), highlighted the powers of various tools within the Google Suite, urging PRNigeria staff to leverage them for smoother collaboration and workflow optimization, in their newsroom.

He listed several tools that can help journalists stay organized and productive; such as Google Drive and Docs which offer real-time document sharing and editing, allowing seamless transition between phone and computer.

“Google Calendar and Tasks can be use to synchronize schedules and tasks, making it easier to meet deadlines and manage appointments, while Google Meet facilitates crystal-clear video conferencing, fostering effective communication within the newsroom”, he said.

Dr. Musa also acknowledged the potential of AI in assisting journalists, emphasizing its ability to automate mundane tasks and provide valuable insights.

“By embracing AI and utilizing its tools strategically, journalists can streamline their workflow, enhance efficiency, and ultimately deliver high-quality news content to their audiences,” he said.

He went on to list other ways AI can benefit journalists, including: multi-media content creation for engaging visuals and graphics.

“Also, there are tools that can be deployed for fact-checking and storytelling to verify information and create compelling narratives,” said Dr. Musa.

The BUK don however, cautioned that AI is not without its limitations, while stressing the importance of deploying AI responsibly and with a thorough checking.
