Why ‘Democracy Game’ was Invented – Group
There is a reason why the Democracy Game, an indoor sport, was invented, says Mr. Olu Abiodun, the Committee Secretary of the Patriotic Group of Nigerians, who are behind the evolution of the game.
Developed in 2010, and formerly introduced to the public for the first time in the year 2013 during a workshop and world press conference in Abuja, the game was created in order to reshape and sensitize Nigerian society and the entire world by extension in terms of religion, ethnic and political harmony as well as social coexistence.
Abiodun disclosed the rationale at a media chat with journalists in Abuja recently.
According to him, the purpose and underlying principles of the game is to entrench democratic values in Nigeria and primarily prepare responsible citizens into becoming democratic leaders by learning and perfecting the ethics and arts of governance starting from the lower level.
“We humbly dedicated this Game to God and those patriotic Nigerian leaders and eminent citizens whose identities cut across religious, ethnic, social and political frontiers, because they had laboured to see Nigeria become and independent country,” said Mr. Abiodun.
Describing the nature and pattern of the game, Mr. Abiodun, emphasized that prominent leaders and citizens featured in this game have their names and pictures boldly inscribed on the cards and the board.
Some of them included: Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Obafemi Awolowo, Sir, Ahmadu Bello, King Jaja of Opobo, Mrs. Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti and Queen Amina of Zazzau among host of others.

He said; “Being a heterogeneous country, this indoor game can also serve as avenue of uniting citizens from different ethnic groups into a single social entity since the cards used in the game featured famous Nigerian leaders and eminent citizens across the tribes.”
PRNigeria learned that the Democracy Game enable people to understand true politics as a veritable channel for building society when utilized appropriately.
While calling for its adoption as a way of experiencing leisure and imbibing instilling patriotism among citizens, Mr. Abiodun called on the federal government, specifically the Federal Ministry of Sports Development and other stakeholders both in public and private sectors to join hands together in propagating the ideas of the game to the higher level.
“Honestly, in order to achieve the aim of inventing this indoor game, there is need for government and other concerned stakeholders to come into action and help in supporting this cause vehemently.” Mr. Abiodun added.
According to the group, the indoor game is going to be launched this year.
The simulation team behind the development of the game was led by Professor Adekule Akinyemi of Coppin State University, Maryland, USA, Professor Biodun Akinpelu of Lagos State University, LASU, Professor Joel Lade Adeyanju of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, His Royal Highness, Oba Dr. Abodunrin Kofoworola, the Aare of Ago-Are, Oyo State and Pastor Ellion Tanze.
Other members of the Democracy Game Committee included Barrister Favour Ejembi, Hajia Rafat Abubakar, Alhaji Gbola Akinloye and Precious Olukayode.
PRNigeria reports that there are many indigenous innovations in Nigeria that need government support in order to compete with their peers in terms of standardization at global stage.
