Arewa Economic Forum Commends Tinubu, ECOWAS for Lifting Sanctions on Niger, Others

The Arewa Economic Forum (AEF) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his role in the lifting of economic sanctions against Niger and other countries by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The commendation came on Wednesday through the chairman of the Forum, Alhaji Ibrahim Shehu Dandakata, while reacting to the recent lifting of sanctions imposed on Guinea, Mali and Niger over last year’s coup.

The ECOWAS decision will lead to the reopening of borders and continuation of international trade along those corridors.

According to Dandakata “now that the sanctions have been lifted, we are happy and would like to call on all leaders to continue working towards a lasting understanding and resolution of this situation.

“We would like to thank the initiative of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for giving General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) the leverage to use his immense influence to bring this issue to this level. We would also like to thank the leadership of the ECOWAS Commission for this gesture.”

Recall that in August last year the Arewa Economic Forum, during a press conference, was the first to call for a halt to the sanctions and reopening of borders, and urged all parties involved in the conflict in Niger Republic to engage in constructive dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict.

The Forum believed that dialogue was critical in addressing the root causes of the conflicts and promoting understanding and cooperation.

The West African bloc recently lifted sanctions on Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, after the countries announced that they would permanently withdraw from the alliance.
