TIEMS Congratulates New NEMA DG, Plans DRR Summit

The International Emergency Management Society (TIEMS) has congratulated the newly Director General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs Zubaida Umar on her appointment.

The society is also planning to host a summit on Disaster Risk Reduction by the end of 2024.

The Regional Director of TIEMS West Africa Chapter, Mr. Ismail Sani made disclosure at a stakeholders meeting over the weekend.

He described Mrs. Umar’s appointment as a ‘square peg in a square hole’ owing to her good track records of achievements in the various capacities she has served.

While enjoining the new DG to bring onboard her wealth of experiences on moving the agency forward, he assured of TIEMS’ willingness to supports the agency in its emergency management programmes.

The Regional Director said TIEMS is planning to hold a summit and capacity building trainings programmes for the members mostly from response and emergency agencies in order to enhance their disaster management capabilities.

He also assured that the society would deepen its activities towards providing a safer environment.

“Considering the fact that most of our members are drawn from the security and response agencies, we plan to have a quarterly capacity building training in 2024 in order to shape the stakeholders understanding on the need to put in place proactive measures towards tackling environmental disasters.

“Not only that, we also plan to embark on aggressive membership drive in the first quarter of 2024, alongside visitation to some selected emergency response agencies.

“Moreover, TIEMS is equally considering holding a National Summit on Disaster Risk Reductions (DRR) in December 2024,” he added.

Recall that TIEMS was founded in Washington (USA) in 1993, as an international, independent and not for profit NGO which is a global forum for education, training and certification in emergency and disaster management.

TIEMS is dedicated to developing and bringing the benefits of modern emergency management tools, techniques and good industry practises to society for a safer world.
