Kwara Govt Releases 23 Inmates, Reviews 18 Lifer Cases
Today, June 14th, 2024, the Governor of Kwara State, Mallam Abdulrazak Abdulrahman, visited all Custodial Centres in the state ahead of the Ileya festival. He extended his support to the inmates, releasing 23 convicted inmates to celebrate Eid-kabir (Adha) with their families.
Additionally, the Governor reviewed the cases of 18 lifers, resulting in:
– 10 lifers having their sentences commuted to 21 years
– 6 lifers having their sentences commuted to 10 years
– 2 lifers having their sentences commuted to 2 years
– 1 female inmate having her 7-year sentence reduced to 6 months

The Governor also paid the transportation fees for the released inmates to return to their homes. The decisions were based on the inmates’ health status and their demonstrated rehabilitation.
The Controller of Corrections, Mr. Danmairomu Shuaib Ayodeji, expressed gratitude to the Governor for his kindness and encouraged the released inmates to be worthy ambassadors of their families and not return to criminal behavior.
He also commended the Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, and the State Ministry of Justice for their support in reducing congestion in the custodial centers.
