This month, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) launched a month-long celebration of its 60th anniversary with a series of nationwide events. Among other events scheduled were a walk around major cities, a tree-planting initiative to support the government’s green economy and diversification efforts, induction of new members, and Diamond Jubilee awards, among others.

In the celebration mood, the wise words of Aristotle ring true: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” Dr. Ike Neliaku, the institute’s President, has embodied this philosophy, consistently demonstrating exceptional leadership and a commitment to excellence.

On August 25, 2023, Dr. Neliaku was unanimously elected President by the members of the institute and also became the Chairman of the Governing Council, serving a two-year tenure. Neliaku has been the driving force behind NIPR’s transformation, leveraging his vast experience and innovative approach to reposition the institute as a formidable force in the industry.

While navigating the institute through this milestone anniversary, I remember the words of Nelson Mandela: “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” Under his leadership, NIPR has risen to new heights, fostering a culture of excellence and integrity.

With his strategic acumen and passion for public relations, he has not only reconnected with stakeholders but has also attracted new ones. His first few months in office saw him intensify strategic engagement with different stakeholders, signing several MoUs, and reconnecting with the institute’s long-time partners.

As NIPR celebrates its Diamond Jubilee, Dr. Neliaku’s vision for the institute shines brighter than ever, aligning with the words of Mahatma Gandhi: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Through his leadership, he has inspired a new generation of public relations practitioners, solidifying NIPR’s position as a beacon of excellence in the industry.

His leadership style has been a testament to his exceptional vision and dedication. As the institute celebrates its 60th anniversary, it is noteworthy to highlight some of his achievements. In the past year, his leadership has been a testament to his commitment to excellence, integrity, and innovation.

His ability to reconnect with stakeholders has been a hallmark of his presidency. He has deployed innovative engagement strategies, rebuilt relationships, and attracted new ones, expanding the institute’s reach and influence. This approach has fostered a sense of community and belonging among members, reinforcing NIPR’s position as a formidable force in the industry.

Among his campaign,  the institute won prestigious SABRE Award in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, in collaboration with Image Merchant Promotion, as a direct result of Neliaku’s innovative drive. The campaign was recognized for utilizing media relations and stakeholder engagement in fighting quackery in PR practice and attracting unprecedented numbers of registered members.

As a result, certified PR practitioners are now appointed spokespersons in major organizations in the public and private sectors, especially security and financial services. This achievement not only highlights the institute’s commitment to excellence but also underscores Dr. Neliaku’s ability to foster meaningful partnerships.

His strategic acumen has been instrumental in positioning NIPR as a leader in the public relations industry, both nationally and internationally. Among other collaborations, earlier this year, under his stewardship, the Institute partnered with the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Muhammed Idris, to organize the first-ever Spokesperson Summit.

This landmark event brought together spokespersons from the public and private sectors, providing a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration. The summit’s success is a direct result of his ability to bring stakeholders together, fostering a sense of unity and purpose.

The summit, hosted alongside the Spokespersons Communication Award in collaboration with the award-winning PR firm, Image Merchant Promotions Ltd, honored, celebrated, and elevated the outstanding contributions of communication professionals and spokespersons across Nigeria.

Similarly, as one of his campaign promises, he pioneered the first Public Relations University in Nigeria, signing historic agreements with the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management and Development Specs Academy (DSA) in a separate events. These agreements pave the way for the establishment of the Public Relations and Leadership Academy and the University of Public Relations and Leadership in Nigeria.

This initiative will revolutionize public relations education in Nigeria, providing a platform for knowledge sharing and skills development. Again, Neliaku also piloted the launch of the REBIRTH Nigeria program to reposition Nigeria through values re-orientation, citizens education, and promotion of made-in-Nigeria products.

Under his leadership, NIPR’s stakeholder engagement has seen remarkable improvement, fostering a collaborative environment where members feel valued and heard. Within these few months, Neliaku and his team inaugurated the Nigeria Public Relations Week, a resounding success that highlighted the crucial role of public relations in fostering economic growth.

The event brought together industry leaders, practitioners, and stakeholders, providing a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration. This initiative has positioned NIPR as a thought leader in the industry, reinforcing his vision for a more vibrant and effective public relations profession. He invigorated the nation’s economy through effective perception building and reputation management strategies.

Through his business acumen, Neliaku and his team secured several partnerships with the Ogun State chapter, where Governor Dapo Abiodun donated a bus and office to the state chapter.

Additionally, in Ogun State, the Institute established the Young Professionals initiative testifies to his commitment to nurturing the next generation of public relations practitioners. This program provides a platform for young professionals to develop their skills, network, and gain valuable industry experience. For investing in the future of the profession, Neliaku has demonstrated his dedication to building a legacy that will outlast his presidency.

As NIPR celebrates its 60th anniversary, Neliaku’s leadership has been a shining example of excellence, integrity, and innovation. His vision for the institute has inspired a new generation of public relations practitioners, reinforcing NIPR’s position as a beacon of excellence in the industry.

His presidency has been a transformative era for NIPR, marked by innovative initiatives, strategic partnerships, and a renewed sense of purpose. Neliaku’s leadership has positioned the institute for greatness, and his vision for the profession will continue to inspire and motivate practitioners for years to come.

With Neliaku at the helm, NIPR is poised to continue its journey as a leader in the public relations industry, fostering a community of professionals committed to upholding the highest standards of excellence and integrity. As the institute celebrates this milestone anniversary, it is clear that his legacy will be remembered for generations to come.
