DSS Releases Lesser Offenders Arrested During #EndBadGovernance Protests

The Director General of the Department of State Security Service (DSS) has ordered
the release of several individuals arrested during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests, following a thorough review of their cases.

The protesters had been detained for their involvement in the demonstrations, which were part of a nationwide call for improved governance and accountability.

Security sources told PRNigeria that while many of those released were exonerated after comprehensive investigations, others remain subject to prosecution due to established prima facie cases of criminal and violent offenses against them.

A lawyer representing some of the released individuals expressed gratitude for the DSS’s humane approach during the investigation process and the subsequent release of their family members.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the legal practitioner noted that at least six individuals detained in Kaduna were freed after their cases were cleared through the investigatory process. Meanwhile, three individuals are facing prosecution based on evidence of criminal activity.

The lawyer commended the new DG of the DSS for upholding citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful protest and for demonstrating a commitment to the rule of law.

“We urge him to remain resolute in fulfilling the Service’s mandate to investigate and bring to justice those who exploit such rights to commit crimes,” the lawyer added, highlighting the importance of safeguarding both civil liberties and public safety.

As the situation unfolds, many eyes will be on the DSS as they continue to navigate the balance between maintaining order and respecting the rights of citizens to express their grievances.
