2025 Budget: Staff of MDAs Trained on GIFMIS-BPS Implementation

The Budget Office of the Federation has launched a comprehensive training program for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) on the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System Budget Preparation Sub-System (GIFMIS-BPS).

This initiative is to enhance budgetary processes as part of the federal government’s efforts to strengthen public financial management and ensure effective resource allocation.

Director-General of the Budget Office, Tanimu Yakubu, in his opening remark on Tuesday in Abuja, noted that the training will equip MDAs with necessary skills to efficiently utilize GIFMIS-BPS, leading to improved budget preparation, transparency, and accountability.

Yakubu acknowledged previous concerns regarding the national budget’s relevance, execution, and effectiveness, he said: “Together, we can ensure our 2025 budget proposals are robust, focused, and aligned with national priorities.

“This training is crucial for demonstrating our commitment to delivering a budget that meets the Nigerian people’s needs while upholding strict fiscal discipline,” Yakubu said.

According to him, the GIFMIS-BPS system streamlines budget processes, reduces errors, increases efficiency, and enhances financial management through real-time information. He said the training will focus on improved Budget preparation and accuracy, transparency and Accountability in Budget Execution and better resource allocation and utilization

“The Budget Office is committed to providing ongoing support to MDAs throughout the budget preparation process,” Yakubu assured. “Our helpdesk will address any queries or concerns, ensuring a seamless budget preparation experience.”

PRNigeria reports that the 2025 budget proposal is expected to be submitted to the National Assembly by October 2024. Yakubu urged MDAs to study the Budget Call Circular in detail to avoid errors.

Alfred Okoh, Technical Adviser to the DG, who is  also one of facilitator noted that despite challenges faced by budget officers, this training will refresh their memory and avoid erroneous mistakes.

He said the training will facilitate robust conversations and foster synergy among Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), ensuring error-free and well-articulated budget proposals aligned with the President’s agenda.

“It will refresh participants’ minds and ensure continuity as officers transition out of office, with the best replacements guaranteeing error-free and people-centric budget proposals.

“We recognize the impact of policy changes on the budget cycle. However, this training will equip participants to adapt budget spending to policy changes, to yield better outcomes,” he added.
