Police Highlight Eastern Ports Command’s Crime Prevention Successes

The Eastern Ports Command of the Nigerian Police Force held a press briefing at the NPA Dockyard to outline significant achievements in crime prevention, detection, and control efforts within the region’s ports.

Addressing the press on behalf of CP Jimoh Moshood, a police spokesperson of the command, SP Anjuguri Manzah emphasized the low crime rates in Eastern Ports but noted the command’s commitment to continuous improvement in security operations.

The briefing acknowledged strong collaborative efforts with the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) and local port managers. The Managing Director of the NPA, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, and Rivers Port Manager, Mrs. Kenechi E. Okezie, were praised for providing essential logistical support that significantly facilitates police operations.

“Our mission is to ensure that all forms of crime are reduced to the barest minimum, thereby enhancing port operations and boosting economic activities throughout the Eastern Ports,” the spokesperson stated.

Among the highlights of the briefing were significant arrests and recoveries made by the command. Notably, several individuals were apprehended for the diversion of goods worth millions of Naira. In one operation, police officers raided a location on October 1, 2024, arrested four suspects involved in the diversion of a truckload of sugar belonging to the BUA Group, and recovered 118 bags of sugar that were being re-bagged for unauthorized sale. All suspects have confessed and are set to be charged once investigations conclude.

The command also reported thwarting multiple vandalism attempts at port facilities. On October 2, police operatives intercepted suspects preparing to vandalize quay aprons under Berth 5, forcing them to abandon their wooden boats and equipment. Various tools and gas cylinders used for illegal activities were recovered, with ongoing investigations to apprehend those who fled.

Furthermore, on July 20, 2024, a suspect linked to a notorious vandal syndicate was arrested with tools typically used in related crimes. This individual is currently facing prosecution.

In a series of proactive measures, police operations have led to the recovery of equipment related to multiple vandalism incidents, showcasing the command’s commitment to securing port facilities against criminal elements.

A drifting wooden boat also drew police attention on September 29, leading to investigations into its abandonment, highlighting the diligence of the Eastern Ports Police Command in monitoring marine activities.

CP Moshood extended his gratitude to the officers and personnel for their dedication, urging continued vigilance and commitment to combating port-related crimes. He assured all port users that the command is committed to maintaining a safe environment to facilitate uninterrupted operations.

The command’s appreciation for media partners was echoed, acknowledging their vital role in disseminating information about police efforts to combat crime and ensure public safety.

For further updates on the Eastern Ports Command’s initiatives and achievements, the public is encouraged to stay informed through local news outlets.
