Society of Nigerian Broadcasters Calls for National Information Policy to Enhance Responsible Broadcasting

The Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB) has issued a strong call for the development of a National Information Policy to establish a framework for ethical and responsible broadcasting throughout Nigeria.

This call comes following the society’s National Executive Committee meeting held in Lafia, where members underscored the urgency of such a policy to ensure equitable access to reliable information, particularly in underserved rural areas.

A statement signed by Ismail Sani, Vice President of the North Central Zone of the society said the proposed policy aims to guarantee the fair dissemination of accurate information, promote media independence, and balance accountability, all of which are crucial for supporting the broadcasting sector’s role in national development.

The SNB expressed its readiness to collaborate with government agencies, regulatory authorities, and private sector partners to achieve these objectives.

During the meeting, the SNB also highlighted the pressing need for enhanced security measures to protect broadcasters, especially those operating in high-risk environments. The society called for improved physical security protocols and robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard broadcasting infrastructure and data from digital threats.

In addition to security concerns, the SNB reiterated its commitment to the welfare of its members, announcing plans for continuous professional training programs. These programs aim to equip broadcasters with critical skills in emerging technologies, ethical journalism, and industry best practices to ensure they remain competitive and effective in their roles.

Furthermore, the society pledged to pursue welfare initiatives designed to improve job security and working conditions for broadcasters, thereby fostering a motivated and dedicated workforce.

The SNB also appealed to all levels of government to provide necessary incentives to broadcasting stations to alleviate the rising energy costs that have forced some outlets to cut back on their transmission hours.

In a landscape where accurate information is paramount, the SNB’s advocacy is set to play a significant role in shaping the future of broadcasting in Nigeria.
