Counter-terrorism: UN Applauds Nigeria’s Strategic Approach

The Nigerian Government has been commended for it efforts in counter-terrorism for supporting the victims.

The Director of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Centre (UNCCT), Mr Mauro Miedico made the commendation via a video message at the launch of the Model Legal Provisions (MLP) for Victims of Terrorism at the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said the event marked an important milestone in their collective endeavour to support the victims and survivors of terrorism in Nigeria.

“I will like to thank the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Governments of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe for their leadership, courage and enduring dedication.

“The initiatives you have spearheaded for victims, humanitarian aid, psychological support, reintegration programmes and restorative justice demonstrate an inclusive and compassionate approach that the UN is proud to support and structure,’’ he said.

Miedico said the high-Level African Counterterrorism Conference in Abuja, Nepal served as an opportunity to reaffirm the international community’s commitment through the Abuja Declaration to upholding the rights and needs of victims of terrorism.

The declaration, he said, also emphasised the integral role of victims in all efforts to prevent the spread of violent extremism and terrorism.

He said that establishing stronger national frameworks and developing national comprehensive assistance plans would allow victims and survivors to access much needed aid and contribute to preventive efforts at national and international level.

“This is why we commend Nigeria’s efforts to work for victims both at the international and national levels, leading the way in this global shift and being a model for other nations,’’ he added.

The Representative of the United Nation Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC), Mr Cheikh Toure, said the society bear the responsibility to help the victims reclaim their humanity.

He said that restoring a sense of self-worth was essential for healing, adding that listening to their stories and sharing in their pain would empower victims to reclaim their rightful place within communities.
