Reps Reject Six-Year Single Tenure for President and Governors

The House of Representatives on Thursday rejected a bill aimed at amending the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), to establish a single six-year term for both the President and State Governors.

Sponsored by Hon. Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere and 33 co-sponsors, the bill was dismissed during its Second Reading at the plenary session presided over by Speaker Rep. Tajudeen Abbas.

When the bill was introduced for discussion, it faced overwhelming opposition from members, resulting in its outright rejection.

In addition to proposing the single six-year tenure, the bill sought to recognize Nigeria’s division into six geopolitical zones, provide for the rotation of the offices of President, State Governor, and Chairperson of Local Government Councils among the various regions and zones, and mandate that all elections be held on a single day. The legislation was identified as HB. 1511.

The rejection reflects the ongoing debate surrounding election reform and governance in Nigeria.
