TETFund Suspends Foreign Scholarship for Academic Staff, Gives Reasons
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced the suspension of the foreign training component of its TETFund Scholarship for Academic Staff (TSAS) Intervention, citing the excessive costs associated with overseas education and a rising trend of scholars absconding.
In a circular signed by the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny S.T. Echono, and addressed to the heads of beneficiary institutions, including Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, and Provosts, the policy shift aims to conserve foreign exchange and redirect investments toward strengthening the capacity of Nigerian institutions.

Therefore, beneficiary institutions have been advised to prioritize local training programs for their academic staff within Nigerian institutions to enhance institutional capacity and increase the number of scholars benefiting from the intervention.
According to the Executive Secretary, the new policy is expected to take effect on January 1, 2025. However, scholars already enrolled in foreign institutions under the TSAS program will continue to receive support until the completion of their respective programs.
The directive emphasizes the importance of strict compliance and urges institutional leaders to disseminate the information to relevant staff to ensure smooth implementation.
PRNigeria reports that this policy reflects TETFund’s commitment to addressing challenges in funding, while fostering development within Nigeria’s education sector.
