VAU Supports University of Abuja VC Amidst Controversy Over Outdated Leadership Criteria

The Voice of African Universities (VAU) has come to the defence of Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi, Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, calling a recent petition submitted to Honourable Minister of Education Dr. Morufu Olatunji Alausa both baseless and outdated.

In a press statement released on Thursday and signed by Director of Public Relations Jean Luck Aglogan, VAU condemned the petition’s argument, which asserts that a Vice-Chancellor must have a minimum of 10 years of post-professorial experience. “This antiquated notion fails to reflect the progressive standards of global academia, where merit and innovative leadership have taken precedence in university governance,” the group stated.

The press release highlighted that many reputable institutions, including Usman Danfodio University Sokoto, have appointed Vice-Chancellors without such stipulations, further pointing out that the insistence on outdated criteria in the 21st century is not only regressive but also detrimental to the advancement of academia.

VAU underscored Professor Maikudi’s extensive qualifications, citing her notable roles as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dean of the Faculty of Law, and Head of the Department of Public Law as evidence that she is more than equipped for the role. “Her diverse leadership experience surpasses traditional requirements and uniquely positions her to guide the university forward,” the statement read.

The group praised Professor Maikudi’s international acclaim and contributions to elevating the University of Abuja’s profile since entering her acting role. “Under her stewardship, the university has gained significant recognition globally, having represented it at influential conferences in Japan and Paris, and positioning it as a hub of excellence. Prior to her tenure, the institution’s potential was largely overlooked,” they noted.

In their appeal to the Minister, VAU urged him to adopt a progressive perspective in addressing the petition, emphasizing that, as a scholar with extensive international exposure, particularly in the United States, he appreciates the necessity for innovative leadership in academia. “We implore him to reassess outdated policies like the 10-year post-professorial requirement that exclude many capable individuals from leadership roles,” the group stated.

Furthermore, VAU alleged that the petition stems from ulterior motives, specifically accusing the Chairman of the Governing Council, Air Vice Marshal Saddiq Isma’ila Kaita (Rtd), of launching a campaign to undermine Professor Maikudi. “It has become apparent that her refusal to acquiesce to Kaita’s militaristic management style has placed her in his crosshairs,” they claimed.

The group also expressed concern over the increasing trend of appointing retired military personnel as pro-chancellors, arguing that universities should serve as centers for knowledge and innovation rather than adopting a rigid, hierarchical structure that stifles academic freedom.

VAU concluded by reaffirming its unwavering support for Professor Maikudi’s confirmation as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, stating that her education, experience, and innovative vision make her the ideal leader for the institution. “It is essential for the Minister to acknowledge her significant contributions and promote her to the position she rightfully deserves,” the group stated.
