Professor Abdullahi Uba Adamu, a renowned media and development scholar, has emphasized the vital role that organizations like the Bayero University Kano Alumni Association (BUKAA) play in empowering and supporting the career progression of the younger generation. He made these remarks during his keynote address at the annual general meeting and congress of BUKAA, which took place at the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) Auditorium Hall in Abuja.

Organized by the BUKAA FCT Chapter, the event was themed “Bridging Connections: Inspiring Growth Among Alumni” and drew a diverse group of alumni eager to reconnect and collaborate.

In his address, Prof. Uba acknowledged the challenges that some alumni face when considering reconnection. “For many, the thought of reaching out to former classmates can be daunting,” he said. “For some, it brings back difficult memories or highlights personal struggles. However, the underlying mission of alumni associations is genuinely commendable. They underscore the importance of building connections, fostering networks, and providing support.”

He highlighted mentorship as a crucial avenue through which alumni can uplift the next generation, stating, “Regardless of your profession—be it law, engineering, or any other field—mentorship from experienced alumni can spark a transformative ripple effect in the lives of students and recent graduates.”

Prof. Uba also addressed the generational gaps that exist within alumni groups, commenting on the friction that can arise from differing communication styles and ideas. “Younger members often lean toward openness and innovation, while their older counterparts may lean towards tradition,” he noted. “To overcome these hurdles, alumni associations must prioritize inclusivity and adaptability, ensuring they meet the diverse needs of their members and fulfill their mission of building a supportive and vibrant network.”

In his welcome address, Alhassan Muhammad, Chairman of the BUKAA FCT Chapter, reinforced the theme of networking among alumni. He remarked on the importance of collaboration in achieving personal, corporate, and societal goals in an increasingly interconnected world. “Today’s gathering has successfully brought alumni together at a round table, allowing us to reconnect and strategize on how to best support one another,” he said with enthusiasm.

During her remarks, the event’s Mother of the Day, Amina Namadi Sambo, the wife of a former Vice President of Nigeria, celebrated the discipline acquired at Bayero University and reiterated her commitment to giving back. “As a proud alumna, I cherish the values and excellence that Bayero University instilled in us. These principles have shaped my journey, and I am committed to reflecting them in my endeavors,” she stated. Sambo highlighted her recent projects at the university, including the construction of a Center for Gender Studies and a female hostel, expressing her excitement about the opportunity to unite and tackle shared challenges.

In a panel discussion, Alhaji Shuaibu Idris, the National President of BUKAA, emphasized the significance of fostering synergy among alumni to build strong connections that facilitate giving back to Bayero University. “The institution has equipped us with vital skills and knowledge, enabling us to thrive in our respective fields. It is now our responsibility to contribute to the university that has been instrumental in shaping our careers,” he stated.

Among the distinguished guests at the congress were Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad, Minister of State for Education; Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources; and Professor Muhammad Sani Gumel, BUKBDeputy Vice Chancellor; Director General Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mallam Jibrin Ndace among others.

Among the esteemed panelists were Engineer Abubakar Murtala, a prominent civil and petroleum engineer; Hon. Abdullahi Sa’ad Abdulkaqir, a leading politician; Rilwan Hussein Abarshi, a specialist in change management; Dr. Omoh Atsenokhai, a respected librarian and thought leader; Abdulmalik Mahdi, an innovative entrepreneur; and Mallam Yushau Shuaib, from Image Merchants Promotion, publishers of PRNigeria and Economic Confidential.
