Obi Meets Atiku in Adamawa for Academic Excellence

In a momentous celebration of academic success and visionary leadership, the American University of Nigeria (AUN) commemorated its 16th Annual Founder’s Day and 20th Anniversary on Saturday, drawing an impressive gathering of political figures, diplomats, scholars, and traditional leaders from Yola and beyond.

The event, held at the renowned Lamido Aliyu Musdafa Commencement Hall, featured a keynote address by Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and a long-time ally of AUN founder Atiku Abubakar. Obi’s address resonated with the audience as he reflected on the transformative power of education and the pivotal role leadership plays in shaping a nation.

In a message of solidarity, the American Embassy in Nigeria, represented by Deputy Ambassador David Greene, praised AUN’s commitment to the local community and acknowledged the foresight of its founder for establishing the institution in a region ripe with potential for humanitarian outreach.

Highlighting the university’s achievements over the past two decades, AUN President Dewayne Frazier credited Atiku’s leadership for the institution’s success. “Today we celebrate the fruits of two decades of steadfast vision,” he said, recognizing the collaborative efforts of the university’s staff, students, and alumni.

The event also featured the AUN Honour Society’s recognition of students for exceptional academic performance and contributions to community development. Vice President for Academics, Mr. Dan Okereke, announced the establishment of an annual Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) competition in Adamawa State’s secondary schools, reinforcing AUN’s commitment to fostering future innovators.

During his keynote address, Obi emphasized the importance of education, describing it as “more of a calling than a venture for profit.” He urged students to embrace leadership and strive for a better future for Nigeria, despite ongoing challenges. Quoting renowned author Chinua Achebe, he highlighted the critical need for true leadership in addressing the country’s challenges.

Obi called for unity beyond tribal and religious lines, stressing that the success of the nation is dependent on the health and education of its people. “The future of Nigeria lies in the hands of our youth,” he declared, encouraging them to prioritize integrity and excellence.

The celebration reached a poignant climax when President Frazier presented a commemorative book to Atiku, Board of Trustees Chairman Senator Ben Obi, and Obi, acknowledging their integral roles in AUN’s legacy.

In his remarks, Atiku expressed gratitude for the university’s journey thus far, stating, “Today, we celebrate not only a milestone but a movement — a vision that has touched countless lives. This is but the beginning.” He acknowledged the contributions of several key individuals in AUN’s development, including Professor Robert Pastor and Mr. Ahmed Joda.

As AUN looks ahead, Atiku closed with optimism about the future, saying, “For us, this 20th anniversary marks only the beginning of our journey ahead.” The event not only celebrated the university’s achievements but also served as a rallying cry for continued dedication to education and leadership in Nigeria.
