How to Strengthen Correctional Reforms – Minister, Experts

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and experts have advocated for updated laws and policies that align with global best practices as part of efforts to strengthen correctional administration in the country.

According to them, Nigeria needs administrative policies that will enhance correctional service delivery, strengthen justice systems, and alleviate the challenges faced by inmates, ex-inmates, and vulnerable populations within correctional systems.

They also called for programs and reforms that address the problems affecting the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) and the actualization of its core mandates.

Mr. Tunji-Ojo and the experts spoke at an international conference in Abuja organized to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), an organization founded in 1994 by Dr. Uju Agomoh.

Speaking on the theme “Corrections, Justice, Peace, Security, and Development: Impact, Lessons, and Agenda for the Future,” Tunji-Ojo highlighted the pressing issues affecting correctional administration.

He said: “The federal government has been exploring initiatives to equip inmates with skills, education, and support networks that facilitate their reintegration into society post-incarceration.

“We are also committed to putting in place updated infrastructure, technology-driven management systems, and digital solutions for efficient prison administration.”

Speakers at the event urged the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to adopt non-custodial measures such as probation, parole, and community service to reduce prison congestion and promote restorative justice.

“The significance of upholding the fundamental rights of inmates, ensuring access to healthcare, education, and mental health support cannot be overemphasized,” they emphasized.
