FG Tax Reform’ll Decentralize Resources, Strengthen Federalism — Minister

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to decentralizing resources and empowering subnational governments as part of its ambitious tax reform agenda.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed  this during a National Discourse on Tax Reform Bills organized by the Kaduna chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) on Saturday in Kaduna.

Themed: “Tax Reform: The Role of Public Relations in fostering Constructive Dialogue for National Economic Renaissance”

Speaking at the event, the Minister emphasized that the reforms are designed to realign Nigeria’s fiscal systems with the principles of true federalism.

He said by devolving more resources to state and local governments, this will enable FG to promote economic inclusivity and ensure that governance is brought closer to the people.

“These reforms are not just about revenue generation but about empowering our states and local governments to take greater ownership of developmental initiatives. It’s a practical step towards deepening federalism and fostering a system where resources reach the Nigerian people more directly,” Idris stated.

The Minister also highlighted the critical role of public engagement in the success of these reforms. He praised the robust debates and consultations surrounding the tax bills, commending citizens for actively participating in shaping the nation’s economic future.

“Our government is committed to listening and addressing all concerns raised by stakeholders. This participatory approach is central to our democracy and ensures that the reforms reflect the will and aspirations of the people,” he added.

As the administration rolls out its Renewed Hope agenda, Idris assured that comprehensive communication strategies would be deployed to build public trust in the reform process.

He called on organizations such as the NIPR to collaborate with the government in fostering understanding and support for these transformative changes.

He noted that creating awareness and fostering constructive dialogue are essential to dispelling misconceptions and gaining public buy-in for reforms.

“Public relations practitioners have a responsibility to guide the narrative, build mutual understanding, and promote transparency. Their efforts will be instrumental in ensuring that citizens recognize the long-term benefits of these reforms,” Idris said.

He urged stakeholders, including the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, to continue championing informed conversations and partnerships that align with the government’s development agenda.

Minister Idris emphasized that this approach not only reinforces the principles of federalism but also ensures that the benefits of governance are felt more tangibly by citizens.

“When resources are managed closer to the people, the impact is immediate, visible, and relevant to local needs,” he remarked.
