Nigerian Army Celebrates WASA 2024 in Minna with Vibrant Cultural Festivities

The atmosphere was charged with excitement at the Minna Military Cantonment as the Training and Doctrine Command Nigerian Army (TRADOC NA) and the 31 Artillery Brigade co-hosted the highly anticipated Joint West African Social Activities (WASA) 2024 on Saturday, December 7, 2024.

This annual event drew together military personnel, their families, various security agencies in Niger State, and esteemed guests for a colorful celebration of culture and camaraderie, held at the Cantonment Parade Ground. WASA 2024 provided a unique platform for the Nigerian Army to reflect on a year filled with significant activities while promoting unity and togetherness among service members and their loved ones.

Major General Kevin Aligbe, the Special Guest of Honour and Commander TRADOC, expressed his happiness at the successful execution of the social event, emphasizing its importance in providing officers and men with an opportunity to connect with family and friends amidst their demanding schedules.

“This event is significant for the Nigerian Army as it allows us to wine and dine with our families while fostering the spirit of unity,” Maj Gen Aligbe stated. He praised the accomplishments of TRADOC NA and the 31 Artillery Brigade throughout 2024, despite the complex security environment in the region.

Highlighting the operational successes achieved over the year, he assured attendees that the Brigade and its units are committed to strengthening their responses to ongoing security challenges in the area. He also took a moment to honor the sacrifices of fallen colleagues, including the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja CFR, recognizing their unwavering dedication to duty.

Maj Gen Aligbe expressed gratitude towards the heads of other security agencies in Niger State, underscoring the importance of collaboration among all agencies for effective security management. He also acknowledged traditional rulers and opinion leaders for their roles as key stakeholders in local security governance.

Brigadier General Hamidu Bobbo, Commander of the 31 Artillery Brigade, described WASA as a vital opportunity to showcase the cultural heritage of military personnel while reinforcing peaceful coexistence among troops and their families. The event featured a variety of entertainment including cultural performances, music, tug-of-war competitions, and dance displays, all contributing to a festive atmosphere.

The highlight of the celebration was the presentation of awards to outstanding soldiers from TRADOC NA, 31 Artillery Brigade, and the 313 Artillery Regiment. Eleven soldiers were recognized across three categories, including “Best Firers,” “Best Turned Out Soldiers,” and “Most Disciplined Soldiers.” Awardees included Warrant Officer Ishaku Abdullahi and Signal Man Patrick Michael, both of whom excelled in the quarterly range classification.

As the festivities concluded, the bonds of camaraderie among service members and their families were evident, reinforcing the morale and operational effectiveness vital to the Nigerian Army’s mission. The WASA 2024 celebration not only marked the closure of the training year but also reaffirmed the collective commitment to peace and security in the region.

The evening wrapped up with ceremonial traditions, including the beating of the retreat and the lighting of a bonfire, encapsulating the spirit of unity and resilience within the ranks of the Nigerian Army.
