MAAUN Gets NUC Approval to Commence Medicine, Architecture and Other Academic Programmes
The Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) in Kano has celebrated a significant achievement as it received official approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence Medicine, Architecture and other Academic programmes.
The milestone was announced by Dr. Habeeb Awaisu, Vice President of Administration when he received participants in the PRNigeria Young Communication Fellowship on a guided tour of facilities in the University.
Dr. Awaisu said apart from the nod from the NUC to commence Medicine and Surgery (MBBS), it is also granted approval under its School of Environmental Sciences to offer degree programmes in Architecture and Quantity Surveying. This is coming few years after similar approval for law programme.
He emphasized that the NUC’s endorsement was the result of a meticulous monitoring and evaluation process. He detailed how the commission conducted a thorough inspection of the university’s resources, including modern faculty infrastructure, academic materials, and a team of highly qualified staff, before granting the accreditation.
“This approval showcases MAAUN’s determination to deliver high-quality education, backed by state-of-the-art facilities and a team of experienced lecturers.”
He said with the latest development, MAAUN-Kano now offers 22 undergraduate programmes, spanning diverse fields such as social sciences, health, law, and medicine.
Awaisu said: “Under its School of Social & Management Sciences (SSMS), it offers eight degree programmes in Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Human Resources Management, International Relations, Mass Communication and Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution
“In our School of Computing (SC), MAAUN offers degree programmes in Computer Science, Cyber Security, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Data Science and Information Systems
“While School of Health Sciences (SHS): Offers degrees in Medical Laboratory Sciences (BMLS), Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) and Public Health, the School of Nursing Sciences offers BSc. Nursing Science.”

During the guided tour of the university’s facilities, Dr. Musa Abdullahi Sufi, Coordinator of the Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo Foundationh highlighted that the NUC approval is not just a reflection of MAAUN’s growth but also a response to the increasing demand for quality higher education in Nigeria.
“MAAUN combines an American-style pedagogical approach with Nigerian cultural values, equipping students with essential skills for success in an increasingly competitive global landscape.
“In addition to our state-of-the-art facilities designed to foster innovation and academic growth, the university features a well-equipped lecture theatre that provides a conducive learning environment for our students,” he noted.
“The e-library and traditional library are both outfitted with computers, ample lighting, and uninterrupted internet access, facilitating seamless online access to academic resources.”
Dr. Sufi who is also a Senior Lecturer in the university underscored the institution’s mission, quoting the founder’s belief that education is fundamental to addressing the pressing issues faced in the Northern region of Nigeria. “By equipping our youth with knowledge, we can tackle the multifaceted challenges confronting our nation,” he stated.
In terms of safety, Dr. Sufi assured that MAAUN is well-equipped with a robust security infrastructure, providing a secure learning environment that allows students to focus entirely on their studies. “These proactive measures reflect our commitment to maintaining a safe and conducive academic atmosphere,” he affirmed.

The PRNigeria Young Communication Fellows thoroughly enjoyed their campus tour, which was part of an extensive mentorship program featuring engaging lectures, networking opportunities with communication professionals, and hands-on practical exercises.
