The federal government has applauded states over the creation of Ministries of Livestock Development at the subnational level, maintaining that the action is a clear demonstration of support for the presidential initiative in the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development.

Making the commendation today in a keynote address at this year’s edition of the Continuing Education program for vertinery professionals, the Hon. Minister, Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, Alh Idi Mukhtar Maiha, told stakeholders that the existence of state Ministries of Livestock Development will facilitate policy coordination, programs and actions, as well as accelerate the overall development of the sector.

The Minister revealed that in the last two weeks, Borno and Yobe have added to the list of states that have created new Ministries of Livestock, describing the development as very encouraging.

Mukhtar Maiha used the occasion to appeal to states that are yet to create their Ministries of Livestock to do so as a matter of urgency.

The Minister is upbeat that the first National Council on Livestock Development will have representations from all state Ministries of Livestock Development.

According to the Minister, the country aims to standardise domestic production of Livestock and related products in order to access the global Livestock markets.

Accordingly, the Minister said, issues of Livestock migration, animal health, food and water, as well as breed improvement will be tackled expeditiously.

We need to overhaul the necessary regulations for milk collection mechanisms, take inventory of the value chain establishments, Livestock census and ensure strict enforcement of regulations as well as conduct nationwide vaccination of animals, the Minister said.

This year’s edition of the continuing education programme for veterinarians has as its theme, “Veternarians as policy advocates; Giving voice to animal health ”
