Lessons Learned: My Memorable Journey with PRNigeria Fellowship
The maiden PRNigeria Young Communication Fellowship has been a transformative milestone in my life’s journey. It was an experience that instilled values, offered immense exposure, nurtured mentorship, and fostered lasting friendships. I have never been part of a program that has had such a profound impact on me.
As a graduate of Guidance and Counseling from the University of Ibadan, my academic background was centered on helping people. Yet, I always had a deep interest in communication, public relations, and journalism. The fellowship gave me the chance to merge these passions, intertwining my desire to help people with my newfound calling in media and communication. It boosted my confidence and provided a solid foundation for building a career in this dynamic and ever-evolving field.
A Defining Achievement
Among my proudest achievements in 2024, this fellowship stands out. It propelled me closer to my aspirations and clarified my career direction. The journey began with an intensive and reflective application process. I recall spending hours rewriting my personal statement, striving to articulate my passion for communication and my urge to bring about change through storytelling. Receiving the acceptance email was both thrilling and nerve-wracking. Little did I know how the program would push me beyond my imagination.
A Journey of Learning
The fellowship kicked off with an engaging orientation session, where I was immediately struck by the diversity of my peers. These young communicators, drawn from different backgrounds, brought rich experiences and unique perspectives. From the warmth and enthusiasm of the organizers, it was clear that we were embarking on a meaningful journey together.
Throughout the program, I had the privilege of learning from seasoned facilitators and industry experts. Each workshop was meticulously designed to address crucial aspects of communication, including digital communication, solutions journalism, multimedia journalism, ethics in journalism, principles of public relations, and the art of effective public speaking.
One of the most unforgettable sessions was led by Barrister Chimdi Neliaku, who shared profound insights on ethics and conduct in public relations. Her emphasis on transparency and empathy as core principles of journalism and PR was eye-opening and has stayed with me ever since.
Another impactful session was on digital media strategies, facilitated by Mr. Kabir Abdulsalam. He highlighted how social media can shape narratives and build communities, reinforcing its pivotal role in today’s communication landscape.

Collaboration was a cornerstone of the fellowship. Working with my peers on various projects and assignments was both enlightening and rewarding. Brainstorming sessions were brimming with creativity, and seeing our collective ideas come to life was immensely fulfilling. Beyond professional collaboration, the fellowship fostered friendships that became a support system, extending beyond work to personal connections.
Mentorship: A Guiding Light
The mentorship aspect of the fellowship was one of its greatest strengths. We were privileged to be guided by experienced journalists and communication experts. Among them, Alhaji Yushau Shuaib, the visionary driving this fellowship, offered invaluable insights that refined my career path. His one-on-one sessions were instrumental in helping me focus my aspirations as an aspiring journalist and PR practitioner.
Additionally, learning from Prof. Ali Isa Ibrahim Pantami was equally inspiring. His real-world experiences and teachings ignited a spirit of confidence, creativity, and competence within us.
Practical Experiences
The fellowship wasn’t limited to theoretical learning; it offered hands-on practice that solidified our understanding. One memorable project involved shooting videos and conducting interviews, allowing us to apply the theoretical principles of multimedia journalism. This practical experience not only enhanced my knowledge of communication through photography and videography but also underscored the growing importance of multimedia storytelling in today’s world.
Transformative Lessons
The lessons I learned during the fellowship continue to influence my personal and professional development. I gained a broader understanding of digital communication strategies, ethical public relations, and crisis management. The emphasis on crafting compelling narratives and engaging diverse audiences has equipped me with tools to drive positive change in society.
Above all, the fellowship reinforced my belief in the transformative power of communication. When done right, it can shape narratives, influence perceptions, and drive meaningful action.
Gratitude and Moving Forward
Looking back, I am deeply grateful for the time I spent as a PRNigeria Young Communication Fellow. The skills I acquired, the mentors I learned from, and the friendships I built have all contributed to my growth as a communicator. The fellowship instilled in me a sense of responsibility to use my voice ethically and effectively to influence positive change.
I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Zekeri Laruba Idakwo, the Fellowship Coordinator, whose professionalism ensured a flawless experience for all participants. I am also grateful to Mr. Abdulsalam B. Mahmud, Deputy Editor at IMPR, who not only edited our works but also taught us how to become better writers.
