NUJ Condemns JED’s Alleged Dubious Disconnections in Bauchi
The Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly criticized the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED) for its questionable operations in Bauchi State.
In a statement signed by its State Secretary, Malam Isah Garba Gadau, the union expressed disappointment over JED’s unnecessary disconnections, particularly affecting customers with prepaid meters. This tactic, the NUJ claims, is aimed at forcing customers to adopt estimated billing, which benefits JED officials personally.

The NUJ highlighted the inconsistencies in JED’s billing system, citing instances where customers are charged for services not rendered, including “payments for darkness” ¹. The union condemned JED’s deliberate frustration and embarrassment of customers, even those using prepaid meters.
To address these issues, the NUJ advised the Bauchi State Government, ministries, and agencies to explore alternative power sources, reducing their reliance on JED and minimizing losses from inflated billing. The union also urged JED to overhaul its operations by hiring well-trained staff with improved customer relations skills to enhance service delivery.
By speaking out against JED’s alleged malpractices, the NUJ aims to protect the interests of electricity consumers in Bauchi State and promote better services from utility providers.
