AFCRD 2025: Military honours outstanding soldiers

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, has honoured and commended some Soldiers, Ratings and Airmen of the Armed Forces of Nigeria for their outstanding performances in 2024.

Musa gave the commendation in his remarks at the Armed Forces celebration and Remembrance Day Social and Award Evening for Soldiers, Ratings, and Airmen in Abuja on Sunday.

He noted that it was imperative to recognise the commitment, gallantry and indomitable spirit of retired and active members of the armed forces during this year’s celebration.

He added that anyone, who had signed to put his life on the line for his nation deserves commendation, saying that, he therefore chose to thank the soldiers for the job being done.

“I want to tell you we appreciate everything you are doing, all the sacrifice, leaving your families behind, staying in the trenches, doing so many wonderful things.

”Most times we don’t tell you thank you enough, but this is one way of saying thank you and we appreciate you, and to whom much is given, much is expected.

”This is also to tell you that we will do everything possible to ensure that we take care of you and look after your welfare to make you work better,” he said.

The CDS disclosed that it was no longer going to be only punishment or charging soldiers for court martial but also commending those that had done well.

He announced that each awardee would be given certificate of commendation, recommended for promotion when they were due, and presented with the sum of N1 million each.

Musa also said that the name of the annual celebration would be changed from the ‘Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration’ to ‘Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.

This, he explained, was to remember those that had died, as well as those still serving.

He added that the award night was the first of its kind and had provided a unique opportunity to celebrate the courage, patriotism and resilience of the brave men and women of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

According to him, their exceptional courage and dedication embody the very essence of soldiering, especially as members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

”Our great nation is indebted to your service, loyalty and legacy. Therefore, as we celebrate tonight, let us not forget these noble sacrifices that have been made for our freedom in defence of our motherland.

”Our strength as a military force does not only rest in our individual capabilities, but our collective commitment to protect and serve the nation.

”To the awardees, I offer my heartfelt congratulations as your selflessness and courage is well recognised and appreciated.

”I therefore urge you all to continue to strive for excellence, uphold the highest standard of conduct and professionalism, and support one another in all your endeavours.

”You must all stay loyal and focus on the call of duty which you have chosen. As you continue to tackle the security challenges across the country, I charge you to remain ambitious, innovative and committed.

”As the Chief of Defence Staff, I assure you that we will continue to do everything possible, to ensure your welfare and well-being of your families are adequately catered for. We must continue to work together.”

Musa further expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, for his steadfast leadership and continued support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

He emphasised the need for services, to sustain the high level of synergy being exhibited in all theatres of operation across the country for maximum results.

The award categories include Commendation Award, Defence Research Award, and Defence Valour Medal For exceptional personnel.
