Armed Forces Day: Niger Governor Hails Sacrifices of Fallen Heroes

The Executive Governor of Niger State, His Excellency Umaru Mohammed Bago, has commended the sacrifices of fallen heroes and the dedication of serving personnel in safeguarding Nigeria’s peace, unity, and progress.

Governor Bago made these remarks on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, during the Wreath-Laying Ceremony commemorating the Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) 2025. The event took place at the Cenotaph in the Old State Secretariat, Minna, Niger State.

In his address, the governor paid tribute to the supreme sacrifices made by military personnel in defense of the nation both at home and abroad. He lauded the efforts of both serving and retired members of the Armed Forces for their commitment to keeping Nigeria secure and united.

He called on Nigerians to continue supporting and praying for the armed forces in their constitutional duties, emphasizing the need for goodwill and encouragement toward their unique service.

As part of the commemoration, Governor Bago presented a cheque of ₦50 million to the Nigerian Legion in Niger State, a gesture aimed at recognizing and supporting ex-service personnel.

The Armed Forces Remembrance Day serves as a platform to honor the contributions of military heroes, including those who made the ultimate sacrifice and veterans who served with pride, selflessness, and dedication.

The occasion featured several activities, including special prayers at the Central Mosque and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Minna Military Cantonment, where tributes were offered for both living and fallen heroes of the armed forces.

The event’s climax included a parade review and wreath-laying ceremony led by Governor Bago, joined by Maj. Gen. Kevin Aligbe, Commander of Training and Doctrine Command Nigerian Army (TRADOC NA), and other dignitaries. A symbolic release of pigeons signifying peace, observance of a minute of silence, and the sounding of the “Last Post” further underscored the solemnity of the occasion.

Dignitaries in attendance included the Chief Judge of Niger State, the Chairman of the Niger State Council of Chiefs, members of the State Executive Council, senior military officers, heads of security agencies, and members of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), Minna Chapter.

The Nigerian Legion, comprising retired military personnel, was acknowledged for their enduring contributions to the nation’s defense and development.

Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, expressed appreciation for the support shown to the armed forces and affirmed the military’s commitment to protecting the country’s sovereignty.

The 2025 AFRD celebration reinforced the nation’s gratitude and commitment to honoring its heroes, past and present, for their sacrifices in service to Nigeria.
