Gen. Olukolade Urges Improved Welfare for Families of Fallen Heroes, Military Veterans

The former Spokesperson of the Defence Headquarters, Major General Chris Olukolade (Rtd), has called for more deliberate efforts to improve and sustain the welfare of families of fallen heroes and military veterans.

He emphasized that personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) have paid their dues by safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and core national values.

Speaking in an interview with TVC to commemorate the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, which was monitored by PRNigeria, Gen. Olukolade acknowledged the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the living conditions of these families but stressed the need for greater commitment to achieve meaningful impact.

“On an incremental basis, the government continues to respond to these plights, but much more still needs to be done. Authorities should recognize the sacrifices made by these fallen heroes and extend more support to their families,” he stated.

He also underscored the challenges faced by military veterans, often referred to as “living legends,” urging the authorities to address their concerns.

Furthermore, the retired General urged the Ministry of Defence and the Defence Headquarters to prioritize the implementation of policies that will effectively improve the welfare of both serving and retired personnel of the armed forces.

The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed annually on January 15 to honor fallen soldiers and veterans who have dedicated their lives to national service.
