NAF Clears Air on Buguma Wellhead Explosion
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has refuted allegations that it was responsible for the recent explosion at the NNPC wellhead in Buguma Community, Rivers State.
In a statement released today by Air Vice Marshal Olusola F Akinboyewa, Director Public Relations and Information, described the report as “misleading” and “unfounded”.
According to the NAF, the wellhead had been leaking crude oil due to prolonged illegal activities in the area. Video recordings from previous missions confirm that the wellhead had been leaking for an extended period, resulting in the accumulation of gas and flammable liquids in the surrounding environment.

The NAF also released high-definition video recordings from its platform, including footage from December 2024, which clearly show the wellhead spilling oil and the barge already burnt before its arrival at the location.
The Air Force noted that it ensures due diligence before engaging any target, and that the safety of innocent civilians and the protection of critical infrastructure remain a top priority.
This development comes amid reports of a massive oil spill forcing Buguma residents to flee their community. The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has also launched a probe into the offshore wellhead fire.
