Major General Godwin Mutkut Takes Over as MNJTF Force Commander
Major General Godwin Mutkut has officially assumed command as the new Force Commander (FC) of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), following a handover ceremony held at the MNJTF Headquarters in Farcha, N’Djamena, Chad, on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
A statement by the spokesperson of MNJTF, Lt Colonel Olaniyi Osoba said he takes over from Major General Ibrahim Sallau Ali, who led several counterterrorism operations and security initiatives across the Lake Chad Basin during his tenure.
In his inaugural address, Major General Mutkut expressed gratitude to the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) and the MNJTF’s contributing member states for entrusting him with the leadership role. He pledged to build on the achievements of his predecessors and further enhance regional security.
“I am honored to take on this responsibility and committed to working closely with all stakeholders to consolidate our gains and address the evolving security challenges in the Lake Chad Basin,” Mutkut stated.

Outgoing Force Commander Major General Ibrahim Sallau Ali congratulated his successor and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the MNJTF to greater success. He highlighted Mutkut’s extensive operational experience, noting that he had previously served as Commander of Sector 3 MNJTF, General Officer Commanding 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, and Force Commander of Operation HADARIN DAJI in Nigeria.
Ali emphasized that Mutkut’s deep understanding of the security landscape in the Chad Basin region would be instrumental in sustaining the fight against terrorism.
Major General Mutkut, a seasoned senior officer of the Nigerian Army, is widely regarded for his leadership and combat experience. He previously commanded the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, a unit known for its counterterrorism and anti-banditry operations in northwest Nigeria. His appointment reflects the commitment of MNJTF member states to ensuring strong leadership in addressing the region’s security challenges.
The MNJTF, a multinational force comprising troops from Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, and Niger, plays a crucial role in countering terrorism and insurgency threats within the Lake Chad Basin.
