AU Commits $800,000 to Strengthen Nigeria, Lake Chad Region’s Anti-Terror Fight
The African Union (AU) has committed $800,000 to support the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in its counter-terrorism operations across Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin.
AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, Ambassador Adeoye Bankole, announced this at the 5th Lake Chad Governors’ Forum in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Wednesday.

He noted that the MNJTF’s crucial role in securing insurgency-affected areas, mitigating violent attacks, and facilitating stabilization programs since 2015. The new funding aims to enhance counter-terrorism operations, intelligence sharing, and regional security efforts.
Bankole urged international partners and member states to sustain financial and logistical support, warning that the security challenges in the region far exceed available resources. He also stressed the need for governments in the Lake Chad Basin to integrate counter-terrorism strategies into their national budgets.
“The fight against terrorism is not just a military operation; it requires coordinated governance, humanitarian response, and socio-economic recovery,” he said.
