OPERATION DELTA SANITY: Naval Troops Deactivate 29 Illegal Refining Sites in N/Delta
The Nigerian Navy has dealt a significant blow to crude oil thieves in the Niger Delta region, deactivating 29 illegal refining sites in January 2025.
The operation, code-named Operation DELTA SANITY II, is part of the Navy’s efforts to eradicate crude oil theft and other maritime crimes in Nigerian waters.
According to the Director of Information, Nigerian Navy, Commodore A Adams-Aliu, the operation has yielded impressive results, including the seizure of large quantities of stolen crude oil and illegally refined Automated Gas Oil (AGO).
“The Nigerian Navy is committed to safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain and promoting economic growth,” Commodore Adams-Aliu said. “We will continue to work assiduously to eradicate maritime crimes in Nigerian waters.”

Some of the notable successes recorded during the operation include the deactivation of nine inter-linked illegal refinery sites at Obe-Nla riverine community in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, and the seizure of a 30-meter wooden boat conveying 40,000 litres of stolen crude oil around Obe-Nla Riverine community in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The Navy also recovered several thousand litres of illegally refined AGO from various locations, including Abalama in Rivers State and Obodo Omadino in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State.
He said the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, has commended the personnel involved in the operation for their dedication and hard work.
The Nigerian Navy’s efforts to combat crude oil theft and other maritime crimes are ongoing, with the aim of promoting economic growth and safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain.
