Imam Sholagberu Preaches Unity, Inclusion Among Muslim Sects

National Mosque Imam, Dr. Sholagberu, Calls for Unity Among Muslims Regardless of Sectarian Differences

Imam Sheikh Dr. AbdulKadir Al-Salman Sholagberu, the Malami Ubandoma of Ilorin Emirate and Imam at the National Mosque in Abuja, has emphasized that a country’s development hinges on the unity and peaceful coexistence of its religious groups and scholars.

Sholagberu made this statement during his inaugural Jumat prayer and lecture at the National Mosque in Abuja on Friday, asserting that true progress and happiness among a nation’s people can only arise from the unity and righteousness of its religious leaders.

“And if your Lord had willed, He could have made mankind one community; but they will not cease to differ, except whom your Lord has shown mercy. And for that, He created them…” he quoted from the Quran (Al-Hud, 118-119).

He urged scholars to unite, moved by the spirit of reconciliation and understanding. “No party is superior to the other,” he said, recalling the words of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him: “If a man says, ‘People are doomed,’ then he is the most doomed of them.”

The Imam stressed the need for preachers to clarify their paths before embarking on their journeys. “Our preachers must illuminate the way before walking it,” he advised. “They should clear misconceptions and light the path for others.”

Sholagberu called upon religious leaders to learn from one another and foster forgiveness in order to advance society. “Scholars of the nation, why not excuse each other, learn from each other, and forgive one another?” he asked, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and growth among scholars.

He challenged the notion that only certain interpretations of Islam should be valid, noting that if mistakes were not forgiven, it would undermine the teachings of many respected scholars. “If you reject the mistakes of others, then you should refrain from benefiting from the knowledge of many esteemed scholars, and even boycott their works,” he said.

The Imam encouraged his fellow preachers to let go of hatred and emulate the great imams, who accepted differing views. He cited examples of past scholars who embraced diverse opinions, arguing that the truth can be recognized from any source. “The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, accepted truths even from those who did not share his beliefs,” he pointed out.

In stirring remarks, he reminded religious leaders of their critical roles within society. “You are the backbone of your communities,” he declared. “Your unity will lead to greater advancements in society. Has not the time come for believers to submit humbly to the remembrance of God?” (Al-Hadid, 16).

Sholagberu also urged Muslims to reflect on their past actions as they await the coming of Ramadan, encouraging them to let go of grudges, hatred, lies, hypocrisy, and sinful behaviors. “May God grant us the chance to reach Ramadan and accept our offerings within it,” he prayed.

Representing the Emir of Ilorin and the Chairman of the State Council of Ulama, former Grand Khadi of Kwara State, Salihu Mohammed, affirmed the Imam’s capability and urged everyone to support his efforts. “He can perform; he will perform, and we ask that you all give him your full support for his success,” Mohammed stated.

In closing, he echoed the importance of unity among Muslims and Christians, citing former President Ebele Jonathan’s call for peaceful coexistence among all religious groups. “Without unity, Muslims cannot approach Christians, and without peace, Christians cannot engage with Muslims. Let us work together for visible coexistence,” Mohammed urged.
